On Friday, President Chan Santokhi unveiled the project board for the AHP housing project in Commervene-Vorbourg. The project covers an area of 8.5 hectares, divided into 161 plots and three main roads and intermediate roads. The project is part of the government’s housing program. “We have launched housing construction programs in many areas, which are fully funded by the government,” said the president.
Commewijne Regional Commissioner Mohamedsafiek Radjab, a delegation from the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB), contractor China Dalian International Economic and Technical Cooperation Group, Ignaz Ahmadali, CEO of FAIRALI Design Engineering Consulting, and National Housing Project Manager Marc Romi and his team were also present.
Ignaz Ahmadali, the director representing the State of Suriname, stressed that an agreement has been reached between the Islamic Development Bank and the State of Suriname for the construction and renovation of 3,775 houses. Following a bidding process, the company was designated as the China Dalian International Economic and Technical Cooperation Group Corporation. The company has already started work at the Voorburg site. A land development project committee has been established to announce the launch. “A special feature is that an Islamic Development Bank delegation is currently visiting Suriname; therefore, the launch was timed with the President,” Ahmadali explained.

Of the 161 plots on the Voorburg site, 150 are for the construction of one- and two-bedroom homes. The other plots are reserved for public facilities such as a fire station, SoZaVo facilities, parks and sports fields, playgrounds and a nursery. Financing is under an agreement between the state and the Islamic Development Bank.
President Santokhi stressed that the land is government land and that the government gave it to the community to achieve affordable housing, according to the Surinamese Communications Agency. “This project will continue,” the president promised. In recent days, the head of state visited clients of the AHP project, including the elderly and people with disabilities. These clients were satisfied that the project supported them in improving their homes, including some new roofs. Santokhi said these may be small things in people’s lives, but they greatly improve their quality of life and contribute to the mental health and well-being of the community.
