SANTO DOMINGO – President Luis Abinader attended this Friday the thanksgiving celebration of the 161st anniversary of the restoration of the Dominican Republic, held at the American Primate Cathedral.
Archbishop Francisco Ozoria Acosta of Santo Domingo said in his homily that in the last elections the Dominican people expressed satisfaction with the management of the 2020-2024 period.
During the Mass, which was also attended by First Lady Raquel Albayeh and Vice President Raquel Pena, Bishop Ozoria called for hope and prayed for blessings for the next four years of government.
He said the election results were not just a personal victory or a party victory, but an expression of the people’s hopes.
He also described the President’s speech as inspiring, passionate and hopeful, noting that there is hope for reform.
He also expressed the hope of seeing signs of hope in the collaborators of the head of state. “Let them see from them an attitude of serving the country, not the attitude of serving the country.
President lays flowers at the Altar of the Motherland
Earlier, the President laid a wreath at the Altar of the Fatherland to mark the 161st anniversary of the Liberation and on the occasion of his swearing-in as President of the Republic for the period 2024-2028.
Upon arriving at the monument representing the commitment, bravery and patriotism of the founders of the Dominican Republic, the President was given a military-style reception by the Ministry of Defense’s Guard of Honor, accompanied by the singing of the national anthem and a 21-gun salute.
Accompanied by Vice President; Raquel Pena; First Lady, Head of State Raquel Albayeh walked to the place where the fathers of the nation, Juan Pablo Duarte, Matías Ramón Mela and Francisco del Rosario Sánchez, rest, leaving offerings as a sign of respect for the builders of the nation.
In his swearing-in speech, Abinader recalled that the feat of restoration was of great significance to Dominicans, because from August 16, 1963, the Dominican spirit for which the founding fathers fought began to be sanctified, making the desire of our people for independence a reality. Indeed, and establishing an institutional order that guarantees that every child of this beautiful land can be the master of his or her own destiny.
“Every August 16, we commemorate the sacrifice of restaurateurs, reminding us that freedom is not free and that every generation has the responsibility to defend it,” President Abinader stressed in his speech to the National Assembly.
In this context, he recalled that the real strength of a nation lies in the men and women who make it up. Everyone has the potential to contribute to its improvement, and real transformation can only be achieved through participation and civic engagement.
He recalled the names of Gregorio Luperón, Pedro Antonio Pimentel, José Contreras, Gaspar Polanco, Santiago Rodríguez and many others, stressing that they were the ones who gave everything to restore national independence.
“But above all, today is a day to honor the most important hero of our history, the great restaurateur: the Dominican people. “For him we are here, for him we must do everything,” the head of state said in his speech after being sworn in for the 2024-2028 term.
