In an effort to protect the environment and promote sustainable development, the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development (MEDD) recently halted the activities of two precious timber trafficking networks, particularly rosewood, which operated mainly at night and used tractor-trailers to transport stolen loot, thus threatening the country’s natural resources.
The seizure was rigorous and decisive, resulting in the seizure of 122 rosewood trees and 162 common timber trees. These results confirm MEDD’s commitment to a “zero tolerance” policy against natural resource trafficking. As part of the operation, 11 persons of interest were arrested and arrest warrants were issued at Tsiafahy Prison.
The Ministry stressed the importance of working with law enforcement agencies, especially the police and the National Gendarmerie, to combat these illegal practices. This synergy is essential to protect fragile ecosystems and maintain the country’s ecological balance, which is often disrupted by poaching and illegal deforestation activities.
MEDD’s latest action sends a strong signal against the trafficking of precious timber and reaffirms the authorities’ commitment to protecting natural resources for future generations. Faced with the threat posed by these criminal networks, vigilance and cooperation between the different actors remain crucial to combating these violations.
