More than 100 pre-school teachers in Honiara have successfully completed a week-long training of trainers guide for the Preparatory Primary Years (PPY) Master Trainer, which emphasises play-based learning as a tool for learning in early childhood care and education settings.

The workshops will be held simultaneously from August 19 to 23, 2024 in Rock Haven, All Saints Hall and Harmony Conference Rooms.

The seminar was organized by the PPY Technical Working Group led by the Teacher Professional Development Department of the Ministry of Education and Human Resources Development.

The training is designed to help PPY teachers plan and teach effectively, including assessment practices, while adding to the positive outcomes children achieve before they start primary school.

It also helps teachers implement existing curriculum in a way that is both child-friendly and teacher-led. The ‘how to’ approach of the workshop is crucial as it shows teachers a variety of ways to create good learning spaces in their classrooms, including planning a week of teaching and reviewing, using the daily timetable effectively, and nurturing children’s social-emotional intelligence.

Teachers also learned how to help children respect each other. In addition, teachers learned how to evaluate learning practices, using everyday observable evidence to guide learning experiences.

They also learn that they can build positive relationships with their communities, colleagues, and especially with young children, which is a fundamental element of good teaching.

To help teachers put what they learned in the workshop into practice, we asked them to pilot the new teacher guide in their respective PPY classes over the next three months and to conduct monitoring and evaluation.

A review will be conducted to determine how well teachers are implementing the new teachers’ guide before it is rolled out to other schools in the province.

The Primary Preparatory teachers expressed their gratitude for participating in the workshop which helped them implement this play-based learning curriculum in their schools in Honiara.
