The Vatican today (July 5, 2024) officially announced plans for Pope Francis to visit East Timor as part of his trip to Asia scheduled for September 2-13, 2024. – Leicester, the trip includes stages in Indonesia, Papua New Guinea and Singapore.

The detailed program of Pope Francis’ visit to Timor-Leste begins with an official reception upon arrival at the Presidente Nicolae Lobato International Airport at 2:10 pm. At 6:00 pm, a welcoming ceremony will take place outside the Presidential Palace, followed by a courtesy visit to the President of the Republic at 6:30 pm. The Pope will hold a meeting with local authorities, civil society and the diplomatic corps in the meeting room of the Presidential Palace at 7:00 pm, where he will give a speech.

On Tuesday, September 10, at 8:45 a.m., the Pope will visit children with disabilities at the “Irmãs Alma” school. At 9:30 a.m., he will meet bishops and other members of the national Catholic Church at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. At 10:45 a.m., the Pope will meet members of the Society of Jesus at the Apostolic Nuncio.

On September 10, the highlight of the visit will be the Holy Mass at the Taci Tolu venue, which will begin at 4:30 pm and during which Pope Francis will deliver a homily.

On Wednesday, September 11, Pope Francis will meet with young people and give a speech at 9:30am at the Dili Convention Centre. At 10:45am, a farewell ceremony will take place at the Presidente Nicolae Lobato International Airport, followed by departure for Singapore at 11:15am.

Other stops on the Apostolic Tour in Asia include Indonesia, where Pope Francis will arrive in Jakarta on September 3 and leave on September 6, 2024. The Pope will then arrive in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea on September 6 and leave for East Timor on September 9, 2024. Finally, after visiting East Timor, Pope Francis will arrive in Singapore on September 11 and depart for Rome on September 13, 2024.

After the official announcement of the papal visit, Minister Tomas do Rosario Cabral, Deputy General Coordinator and Acting General Coordinator at the senior institutional level for the papal visits, said that “we await with great anticipation and enthusiasm the arrival of Pope Francis” and hoped that “this Apostolic Visit will be a moment of blessing and spiritual renewal for all Timorese, which will inspire each of us to continue building a society based on the values ​​of peace, solidarity and fraternity”.
