The Fiji Police Traffic Unit is urging drivers to be aware of the dangers of speeding after a 21-year-old man died in Tavua on Friday afternoon.
Traffic supervisor, Senior Superintendent Mitieli Divuana, said preliminary information received by traffic investigators indicated that speeding was a factor in the fatal accident.
The 21-year-old was driving on Kings Road near Draunivi in Tavua when the accident happened.
It is alleged that when he tried to overtake another vehicle, he lost control of the vehicle, leading to the accident.
SSP Divuana said the victim was rushed to Tavua Hospital but unfortunately died yesterday morning.
Four people who were traveling with the victim have been treated for injuries.
Superintendent Dibuana said road safety stakeholders continued to issue road safety reminders, whether through the media or during traffic checks conducted in the five sectors.
Despite this, he said, drivers were still being fined for exceeding the national speed limit, which was reflected in accident and fatality statistics, where speeding was a factor.
“Speeding remains a concern. Despite warnings and advisories from the police and LTA, we receive tickets every day from drivers who are speeding.
“Traffic officials at checkpoints have also issued these reminders but they continue to fall on deaf ears. The road death toll currently stands at 31 compared to 57 at the same time last year. If we all acknowledge and take responsibility for road safety, we can collectively stop the death toll from rising.”
