Sri Lankan police said that investigations have revealed that the incident in which several shots were fired at the vehicle of former Anuradhapura district councillor Uddika Premaratne was personally planned by the actor-turned-politician with the assistance of a local assistant superintendent of police (ASP).
Police media spokesperson DIG Nihal Thalduwa said at a press conference in Colombo today (13th) that after investigation by the Criminal Investigation Department, the suspects involved in the incident have been identified.
On September 17, 2023, around 10:35 pm, soon after Premaratne returned to his residence in Anuradhapura, a group of unidentified gunmen opened fire on his car, the MP escaped unscathed.
The assailant was said to have arrived in a car and targeted the MP who was walking towards his home after parking his car. During the shooting, the left rear door glass of Premalatne’s car was damaged and it is believed that the gunman used a pistol.
After the incident was reported, Anuradhapura police immediately launched an investigation and deployed special task force (STF) personnel to strengthen security near the MP’s residence. Subsequently, the investigation into the matter was handed over to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).
The former lawmaker, however, claimed that the existing system in the country was the reason for the recent shooting incident against him.
Speaking on the subject in Parliament, MP Premalatne said that while he believed the system was to blame for the recent shooting outside his residence, it was also the reason why the country was in the state it is in today.
Subsequently, on February 27, 2024, the Sri Lanka People’s Front (SLPP) MP resigned from the parliament and then SLPP’s SC Muthukumarana was appointed to fill the vacant MP seat.
However, it was reported that Premalatha had later flown to Canada to seek political asylum, but he denied the claim and claimed that he was waiting for a work visa for Canada.
In 2020, the famous actor was announced as a candidate for the 2020 parliamentary elections in Anuradhapura district and is a member of the Sri Lanka People’s Freedom Alliance, a political alliance led by the Sri Lanka People’s Party that was formed in 2019.
He received 133,550 votes and won a seat in Sri Lanka’s 16th Parliament.
