SEMARANG, Central Java (ANTARA) – A passenger ship owned by PT Dharma Lautan Utama (DLU) caught fire while it was out of service for maintenance in the waters of Semarang, Central Java on Sunday, a police officer said.
Central Java Provincial Police spokesman Sen Coms Artanto said a team of personnel from the Central Java Water and Air Police Unit (Polairud) had been sent to help put out the fire on the MV Kirana I.
He said fire-fighting efforts were underway, adding that the stricken vessel was undergoing repairs and had no passengers on board when the fire broke out.
He added that he did not yet know the cause of the fire on the vessel.
Meanwhile, PT DLU Semarang office director Herman Fajar said the MV Kirana I was actually scheduled to stop at Tanjung Emas Port before setting sail on August 13.
Fajar said all crew members had been evacuated and there were no passengers on board when the fire broke out.
According to previous reports, Indonesia has experienced a series of maritime accidents in recent years.
For example, in June 2020, a tugboat Multi Sahabat 8 capsized in the waters of Batu Ampal near Batam Island, Riau Islands Province. Although the four crew members on the tugboat survived, the captain was missing.
On September 6, 2023, a fire broke out on the Mutiara Berkah I vessel carrying 135 trucks and 159 passengers at Indahgiat Port, Cilegon City, Banten Province.
On January 21, 2024, the LCT Bora V capsized in the waters of Tagulandang, Kepulauan Sitaro District, North Sulawesi Province after being hit by huge waves in extreme weather.
The ill-fated ferry was carrying 18 passengers when its gangway door reportedly fell off after it was overwhelmed by huge waves.
On March 11, 2024, the MV Pari Kudus, carrying 32 passengers and 3 crew members, capsized in the waters of Rambut Island near the Seerib Islands.
According to Indonesia’s search and rescue agency (Basarnas), the ferry was heading from the Asha Resort on Payong Island in Jakarta’s Seribu Islands district to Pearl Beach in North Jakarta but capsized in the waters off Rambu Island.
