The South Sudan National Police Service publicly announced the appointment of a new spokesperson on Wednesday, 21 August.
Col. John Kassara Koang replaces Maj. Gen. Daniel Justin Boula, who was transferred to the Community Policing Division as director.
Major General Justin told reporters at a handover ceremony at the Traffic Police Headquarters in Juba that Colonel John Kassara-Koang is an experienced police officer who has served in various parts of South Sudan, including Upper Nile, Jonglei and Eastern Equatoria, before being transferred to his new post at the Juba headquarters.
Justin praised his cooperation with journalists and urged the newly appointed police spokesperson to do the same.
“Frankly, these people (journalists) have been working with me and the Bureau of Ethical Orientation in a very good way. We have been working together day and night. I must thank them and appreciate all they are doing to help our public get an accurate picture of what is happening in the country, especially regarding police activities, crimes, situations and so on,” Justin said.
“I hope to continue the same cooperation or even more with my new brother Colonel John because as you know, our police officers are on duty 24/7 as per the law. As usual, you have been calling me. This will continue. John is always available to listen to you and answer any questions or calls,” he added.
Meanwhile, Deputy Police Spokesperson Brigadier James Dark said the media played a huge role in the development and maintenance of security in any country. He said the new police spokesperson would be able to provide the public with the required information through the media.
“So we’re going to work with him, we’re going to be there for him and help him if he needs it,” Dark said.
The new police spokesperson, Colonel John Kassara Koang, thanked the Inspector-General of Police for the confidence he has shown in him, noting that the new job will help him advance his personal career.
“We need to know that security is a shared responsibility for all of us. Therefore, in order to protect our citizens and their property, we need collaborative information-sharing between citizens, the South Sudan National Police Service and media outlets on criminal activities that sometimes occur in certain neighborhoods,” he said.
“The media has a significant impact in shaping public opinion and influencing policy decisions; therefore, our collaboration as police and the media is essential,” concluded Kasara.
