A group of 41 allegedly undocumented Mozambican nationals appeared in the Barberton Magistrates Court on Monday after they were intercepted by police while travelling to Johannesburg.
Those arrested included a pickup truck driver and two taxi drivers, and were charged with crimes including immigration violations, kidnapping, and aiding and abetting.
Mpumalanga Falcons spokesperson Captain Dine Sekgotodi said police made the arrests after the Crime Intelligence Unit received information about two taxis transporting undocumented migrants from Mozambique to Johannesburg.
She added: “The South African Police Service in Kapmuyden, the local crime record centre and border police followed up on this information and the taxis were spotted, stopped and searched on the N4 highway in Kapmuyden, Mpumalanga.”
Police found men, teenage girls and women travelling with young children, all of whom reportedly did not have proper documentation.
The male accused will appear in court again on August 20 for legal aid representation, while the woman and the young child will remain in custody and their case was adjourned until Tuesday to verify their ages and allocate legal aid to them.
The cases against minors have not been processed as they await the involvement of probation officers and social workers.
