The ceremony was presided over by the Deputy Director for Economic Development of the Burela District, Nshimyimana Jean Damascène, who was accompanied by several police officials, including SSP R. Kayiranga, who works at the Rwanda Police Headquarters, and the Burela District Police Commander, SSP Afrodis Nkundinezha.
The cooperative that transports passengers on Lake Brera acquired the boat after the accidents that have been heard of frequently in the past few years, in which some residents survived and others died, because the boat they used could not cope with the winds in the lake and, in addition, it was illegally driven by unprofessional people.
An example is the accident that occurred in the lake in 2019 when a boat drowned eight people who were travelling from Kinyababa area to Kirambo market, including a mother and her child who died while six others were rescued alive.
After these different incidents, the Brera District Administration came up with a sustainable solution and created the Lake Tourism Cooperative to avoid the chaos these tours cause and claim lives.
Butoyi Louis, executive secretary of Kagogo Division, told Kigali Today that by now the cooperative had taken root and owned many motorized boats, with one boat that did not meet the requirements being parked in the lake.
“It makes it easier for us to interact with people rather than working with people individually, they also help us in the fight against drugs, so a well-constructed cooperative is good for both the people and the authorities.
The official said the boat will be added along with five other boats, which will make the journey more burdensome than walking, with citizens taking more than four hours to travel by boat instead of less than 15 minutes at a low price.
He said: “This relationship is easier because as a resident who goes from Kinyababa to Rugarama market, it is difficult for him to go there on foot because he has to go up through Kagari ka Kabaya, through Kilinga, through Nyamabuye to reach it. “It was very difficult for him to go to that market but now he crosses the water very fast and they bring him back at a low price, he pays no more than 200FRW there”.
Besides the boats they received, which could carry 30 to 40 people, they were also provided with clothes to prevent them from drowning in case of accidents.
In a police message to cooperative members, Northern Province police spokesperson SP Mwiseneza asked members of the COOTRALBU cooperative to make the most of the support they received and improve themselves, asking them to make it a habit to save and work with financial institutions.
He also asked everyone to be united in everything, complement each other’s strengths, become good partners of the police, participate in maintaining law and order, report on time, abide by the laws and regulations of the waterway, and also require cleanliness.
This event has delighted the members of the COOTRALBU cooperative, who assured their sponsors that they will increase the productivity of this boat, work harder to develop it and strive to increase the safety of waterways by providing information when they spot smugglers and drug smugglers.
