The Malta Police Force has categorically denied the National Party’s allegations that the information shared at a press conference on August 12 regarding the murder of Nicolette Ghirxi was not accurate.

Police said in a statement released on Monday that all details provided at the news conference were true.

Police have also confirmed they will cooperate fully with the Independent Police Complaints Commission, chaired by retired judge Geoffrey Valenzia. Police will provide all relevant documentation in their possession, including written documentation of Ghirxi’s refusal to accept assistance, as reported by Aġenzija Appoġġ’s risk assessor on April 22.

The statement further clarified that despite Gilsey’s refusal, the police victim support unit still attempted to contact her on April 23, 2024, despite the offer of services being rejected. Police noted that such follow-ups are standard procedure in similar cases.

Police did not comment further on the ongoing investigation, but noted that the Foundation for Social Welfare Services (FSWS) had also categorically denied the allegations against police.

At a press conference on Monday, National Party MPs accused Police Commissioner Angelo Gafà of providing false information and inadvertently placing the blame on the murder victim for refusing a risk assessment.

according to malta sunday timesBack in April, Ghirxi agreed to undergo a domestic violence risk assessment, but she told friends and lawyers that when she went for the assessment, the professional “dissuaded her from doing so.”

The friend told the newspaper she received a voicemail from Gilsey describing how the risk assessor insisted the exercise was ineffective because the messages she received from her ex-boyfriend contained insults, not threats.
