The British government announced on Tuesday that the Police Complaints Commission will launch an investigation into the murder of Nicolette Ghirxi and make recommendations based on a previous independent investigation into the murder of Bernice Cassar.

The Police Complaints Commission was asked on Monday to analyse the Nicolette Ghirxi murder case and scrutinize the recommendations of the Bernice Cassar inquiry, according to a government statement.

It will also analyse the wider actions to combat domestic and gender-based violence within the police force, as well as the current legal system and standard operating procedures.

Several entities, from opposition parties to women’s lobby groups, have been calling for an independent investigation into Nicolette Gilkesi’s murder.

Gilkesi was murdered by her former partner Edward Johnston in her flat in Birkirkara and her body was found in the early hours of Monday 12 August.

Her murder has sparked widespread debate over whether police have the tools they need to prevent female homicide and other forms of gender-based violence.
