A 30-year-old Malian man was arrested last night after being spotted by patrolling police handing bags of cocaine to two men and is currently being detained on drug trafficking charges.

Goita Abudarnma was arrested on Thursday before Magistrate Nadia Helena Vella on charges of trafficking and possession of cocaine and possession of ecstasy in an area frequented by young people.

Police officer Michael Vera told the court that Abdhanma was arrested at Triq San Gorg in St Julian’s at around 11.30pm on Wednesday. Police patrolling the area saw the man hand over a suspicious pouch to two men, who then tried to discard the pouch, which was later found to contain cocaine, when they spotted the police.

The two men, both Croatian nationals, testified during their arraignment, with the first man identifying Abdalma as the man who purchased the drugs from him.

The second witness told the court he was drunk when he bought €90 worth of cocaine and said he could not remember who he bought it from, only that he was black.

The first man was called again and confirmed that his friend was drunk, but said he himself had only drunk three or four beers and was not drunk.

Defence lawyer Ingrid Zammit Young, who was appointed to provide legal aid to the man, pointed out to the court that the accused’s wallet, which was handed over as exhibit by the prosecution, was not kept in the evidence bag.

Officer Vera asked the court to appoint experts to identify the composition of substances seized during the investigation, check Abu Daenma’s mobile phone and determine whether the alleged crime took place within 100 metres of places frequented by young people.

The prosecution opposed the man’s request for bail on the grounds that he had no fixed residence and no job, which increased the possibility of him committing another crime.

The court rejected the request on the grounds that Abu Danamah had no ties to Malta and might abscond.
