In order to separate fact from fiction, the #StopATènè investigative team at Radio Ndeke Luka was interested in verifying these images using some research tools. A deeper analysis showed that the images circulating were not those of patients living in the Central African Republic.
Image taken out of context
After extensive research on image and video verification tools such as Google Reverse Image, Yandex, Lens, and Whopostedwhat, we noticed that these photos were first posted by Congolese Internet users on June 9, 2024. One of them stated in his publication: “Our young people who were troubled by this disease finally died” Another cautioned on his page: “Monkeypox or monkeypox is a reality and a danger in South Kivu. Respect these barrier gestures to interrupt the chain of contamination…”.

When asked about this by Radio Ndekluka, Health Minister Dr Pierre Somsé clarified that the photos were not of patients hospitalized in the Central African Republic.
“It is clear to me that there are a large number of images circulating showing people’s genitals and bodies infested with sores and pimples. These images come from the Democratic Republic of Congo»” clarifies Pierre Somsé, Minister of Health and Population.
Based on our research, one of the images shows an article published by our colleagues from the Democratic Republic of Congo on the website of the Kivu Morning Post on June 10, 2024, with the title and link: “Goma city affected by smallpox monkeys https://kivumorningpost.cd/2024/06/10/nord-kivu-la-ville-de-goma-atteinte-par-la-variole-du-singe/ ».
In this article, the authors alerted to the first reported case of monkeypox in North Kivu, Democratic Republic of Congo.

In summary, images showing monkeypox patients rashSmall missions such as those in the Central African Republic were taken out of context. They were published earlier in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, where a monkeypox epidemic was declared in early June. Before sharing an image, check its authenticity!
