In recent years, plant-based meat has swept the world, attracting consumers who pursue health and environmental protection (including the author). The rise of plant-based meat is no accident. As people pay more attention to health, their dietary choices tend to be more “healthy”. Plant-based meat usually contains less saturated fat and cholesterol, but is rich in dietary fiber and plant protein, and is seen as a healthier alternative. At the same time, animal husbandry is the main source of greenhouse gas emissions. The production process of plant-based meat is more environmentally friendly, reduces resource consumption, and reduces carbon footprint. Out of awareness of animal protection, the number of people who choose to reduce or avoid eating meat is increasing day by day. Plant-based meat just meets the needs of this group of consumers as a substitute for meat.

The study analyzed the eating habits of more than 118,000 British adults and their health status for 9 years and found that for every 10% increase in the intake of processed vegetarian foods, the risk of cardiovascular disease increased by 5%, and the risk of death from heart disease increased by 12%. Researchers believe that during the processing of plant meat, artificial colors, preservatives, emulsifiers and other additives are added. These substances may cause blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol to increase, and then endanger heart health. Therefore, experts recommend that when choosing a plant-based diet, whole natural foods should be the main food.

In addition, the saturated fat and sodium content of some plant-based meat products on the market are also worthy of attention. Every 100 grams of Beyond Meat hamburger contains 5.6 grams of saturated fat and 370 milligrams of sodium, accounting for 28% and 16% of the recommended daily intake for adults, respectively. Therefore, experts recommend that plant-based meat should be consumed in moderation to avoid affecting health.
However, processed food does not mean junk food. Many everyday foods are processed, such as cheese, milk, tofu, soy milk, bread, flour, etc., but they are not necessarily classified as junk food. Similarly, although some brands of plant-based meat have more additives, not all additives are harmful to health. Occasional consumption is acceptable, provided that products with fewer additives on the ingredient list are selected. How to make rational choices in the plant-based meat trend? Reading the ingredient list is the key. Consumers should choose plant-based meat products with fewer additives, and at the same time regard plant-based meat as part of a balanced diet, combined with other fresh fruits and vegetables and whole grains to take in more nutrients.
Plant-based diets have become popular in recent years, leading to the rise of plant-based meat. After the outbreak of the epidemic, people began to reflect on the relationship between diet, health and the environment. However, we should not blindly follow the trend, but make appropriate dietary choices based on our own needs. Although plant-based meat can provide protein and the taste of meat, its degree of processing and additives still need to be treated with caution. Reducing the intake of processed foods is the most effective way to maintain health.
