PKR leaders admit that the national unity campaign between Pakatan Harapan and Barisan Nasional in the Sungai Bakap by-election lacked cohesion.

(TMI)—— This allegedly led to the PN’s defeat despite the fact that the PN candidate, Joohari Ariffin, had better credentials than PN’s Abidin Ismail.

Abidin received 4,267 votes, nearly three times more than last year’s 1,563, while turnout among Chinese and Indian voters dropped significantly.

Penang PKR deputy president Mohamad Bakhtiar Wan Sek admitted that lack of cohesion was the main reason for the defeat.

He said social media has transformed campaigning, but there is room for improvement.

“We have learnt that some groups sent messages through personal WhatsApp numbers to many Chinese voters in Sungai Bakap, calling on them to boycott the election to protest against the removal of diesel and water surcharges in Penang.
