Pilsner Lager, a brand of Uganda Breweries Limited (UBL), has donated Uganda Shs100 million for the 29th Coronation Celebrations of Toro Kingdom to be held on September 12 this year.

The Coronation Anniversary, traditionally known as Empango, is an annual celebration that commemorates the ascension of King Dr. Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi 1V of Toro to the throne when he was three years old.

The meeting was attended by the King, UBL Managing Director Andrew Kilonzo, Toro Kingdom Minister of Culture Peter Sunday and other representatives of Toro Kingdom and UBL.

During the meeting, the Managing Director of UBL, Andrew Kilonzo, congratulated the King of Oyo on the anniversary, noting that UBL was proud to be associated with the rich history of Toro.

Andrew Kilonzo said: “Uganda Breweries just celebrated its 78th anniversary last month and we are proud to be part of such an incredible tradition; we celebrate the spirit of resilience from which the strongest dynasties thrive and we are proud to have been part of your journey of progress over the years.”

Kilonzo also added that UBL works closely with farmers in Tooro Kingdom who over the years have been supplying the company with raw materials used in the production process to create some of its most memorable brands such as Pilsner beer.

“In just one year, we have sourced over 1,000 tonnes of barley, 1,500 tonnes of sorghum and 5,000 tonnes of maize from over 2,000 farmers (800 farmers for barley, 1,500 for maize and 500 for sorghum). We have disbursed over Sh8.7 billion to farmers in Kamwenge, Kabarole and Bundibugyo. We know that agriculture is the backbone of this community and the country as a whole and we are willing to pledge our continued support to the Kingdom and the government’s agenda to help farmers improve their livelihoods, whether through mechanisation or providing a ready market for their produce. In the coming years, we will increase our barley procurement from the region from 1,000 to 2,000 tonnes and maize procurement by 15 per cent from 5,000 to over 6,000 tonnes,” Kilonzo added.

The 29th coronation anniversary of Omukama is expected to be a grand event with various cultural displays, ceremonies and celebrations to commemorate the history and resilience of the Toro Kingdom.

Pilsner Brand Manager Edgar Kihumuro highlighted the brand’s commitment to celebrating Uganda’s cultural heritage. “We are always proud to be part of celebrations that highlight the rich traditions of the Toro people. This donation is a testament to our commitment to supporting and preserving Uganda’s cultural heritage,” Kihumuro said.

Pilsner’s contribution will go a long way in ensuring the success of these celebrations and reinforcing the strong ties between the brand and the Kingdom of Toro.
