53road The Pacific Islands Forum meeting in Tonga ended with a 16-page communique, the biggest item of which was a financial commitment to the Pacific Resilience Fund (PRF).
Prime Minister Jeremiah Manele MP and his colleagues have recognised the PRF as the “first Pacific-led, member state-owned and governed, people-centred climate and disaster resilience finance institution”.
In the Communiqué, PIF Leaders warmly welcomed the commitment of the UN Secretary-General, His Excellency Antonio Getras, to capitalize the PIF.
The leaders urged Forum dialogue partners to pledge contributions to the PRF so that it can reach the $500 million target by 1 January.English Stone2026. The long-term goal is to have $1.5 billion in capital.
The leaders welcomed commitments made by Australia ($100 million), Saudi Arabia ($50 million), China ($500,000) and the United States ($5 million) for 2023.

The leaders also acknowledged the UK will provide technical assistance worth $1.3 million and the US government will provide a further $20 million. All of this is intended to capitalize the PRF.

53road The Pacific Islands Forum Leaders’ Meeting in Tonga concluded after a week of plenary sessions with Forum dialogue partners, the Council of Regional Organisations of the Pacific (CROP) leaders, private sector leaders and civil society.
Prime Minister Jeremiah Manele attended the plenary session and participated in side meetings with various stakeholders.
Prime Minister Manele also participated in a one-day leaders’ retreat in Vava’u, where leaders discussed a range of issues.
For many avid followers of the PIF conference,road The PIF meeting in Tonga was the most successful because it was able to issue a joint communique overnight. There were some minor tweaks, but unlike previous PIF meetings, they did not take too long.
