The Governor of Puerto Rico, Pedro Pierluisi Urrutia, assured that his team “is under the leadership of Luma Energy” in the blackouts that have left thousands of customers without electricity since Saturday in the cities of Coamo, Aibonito and Santa Isabel.
“Well, my team is on LUMA to accelerate the necessary repairs to the network. When I say my team, I mean everything, my entire team, which is the Secretary of the Interior, the Assistant Secretary of Energy, Josue Colon, Fermín Fontanes, and so on,” the governor said in response to questions from the media.
“So, yes, to answer, we are completing repairs on LUMA that were necessitated by a breakdown that occurred due to recent heavy rains and high humidity,” he added.
LUMA Energy’s South Central Region Lines Director Alejandro González announced late Tuesday the planned service disruptions on eight-hour rotating lines in the cities of Santa Isabel, Coamo and El Bonito, which have been out of service for more than 24 hours.
“This emergency plan is designed to minimize the impact of the failure of the Santa Isabel transformer, which also serves the Coamo and El Bonito areas. Through this plan, Vibrant Communities will rotate to ensure up to 8 hours of service per day in all communities while we simultaneously work on a permanent solution. These schedules will be shared through LUMA’s social networks. Critical loads such as water pumps and hospitals will not be affected by these rotation schedules; they will have uninterrupted electricity service, and they have been shared with municipal staff in each town,” Gonzalez said in a written statement.
