The Palau International Coral Reef Center (PICRC) is pleased to announce that two of our valuable team members, Research Fellow Masasinge Tellei Hideos (also known as Singe) and Research Assistant McQuinnley Mesengei, will be completing their tenure with us to pursue further studies.
Singe has been a part of the PICRC family for the past three years, starting his journey with us as an intern while attending Palau Community College (PCC). After graduating with a Bachelor’s degree in Geography (majoring in Environmental Studies), he joined our team as a Communications and Outreach Officer and more recently transitioned into research, contributing to our socio-economic programs. Singe will now pursue a Master’s degree in Environmental Science at Rochester Institute of Technology in New York, USA.
Reflecting on his time at PICRC, Singh shared, “I have learned a lot over the past three years, and these experiences will definitely help me in my future endeavors. I am very grateful to everyone at PICRC for their patience, support, and guidance. I look forward to returning one day.”
McQuinley has been a research assistant at PICRC for three years and will continue his studies in marine science at the University of Hawaii at Hilo. McQuinley, who graduated from PCC with an associate degree in environmental marine science, has always had a deep connection to the ocean, a passion he fostered from his father, a fisherman. This love for the ocean has made his time at PICRC more than just a job, it’s a calling.
“When I started working at PICRC, everything felt natural; learning the science was part of the journey, but the real fun was doing things I loved—like diving in the ocean—and being surrounded by great people. It felt like a family,” McQuinley said. He also shared a piece of advice for young Palauans: “Find something you love to do so that when you’re working, it doesn’t feel like work.”
Director of Research Geraldine Rengiil said, “We are honored to have been a part of Singe and McQuinnley’s careers. Their contributions and personalities have left a lasting impact on PICRC, and we eagerly await the day when they return with new knowledge and experiences to share. Until then, we wish them all the best as they embark on these exciting new chapters in their lives.”
