PICA supports growth of BPO industry – Firstlook

The Passport, Immigration and Citizenship Bureau expressed support for government efforts to modernize the Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) industry at the Jamaica Outsourcing Conference held at the Montego Bay Convention Centre.

PICA CEO Andrew Wynter shared the value of the BPO industry to Jamaica’s economic development and outlined the agency’s commitment to creating more job opportunities for Jamaicans. Mr. Wynter said: “Providing an efficient immigration process for foreigners who bring knowledge and expertise to the local BPO industry facilitates the expansion and sustainability of the industry. This is directly related to creating more jobs for Jamaicans and stabilizing the BPO industry. This certainly bodes well for the national economy as our citizens benefit from the acquisition of skills and knowledge, are able to contribute to the development of their local communities, and improve their living standards and quality of life.

He continued: “For many Jamaicans, working in the BPO industry provides them with an opportunity to build a future and provide for their families. It also enables them to gain transferable skills that can be applied to any work environment, whether at home or abroad, as they will benefit from internationally recognised training and certification.”

In November 2018, PICA and the Jamaica Promotion Organization (JAMPRO) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to collaborate on initiatives that will make it easier for international investors to invest in Jamaica. Under the agreement, PICA will work with JAMPRO to facilitate the movement of investors on the island. The MOU ensures a smooth immigration process for those who require visas and extensions of stay for work permits.

Jamaica’s BPO industry is growing rapidly and currently employs over 20,000 people in over 40 companies, making it one of the largest employers in Jamaica after tourism. Revenues for the industry currently exceed US$400 million.
Keynote speakers for the conference were Brian Cantor and Max Ribitzky, two world-class experts who have shared their knowledge and insights at numerous conferences on customer experience management, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, robotic process automation and logistics. Local speakers included Yoni Epstein, Chair of the Global Skills Council and CEO of ItelBPO, Howard Mitchell, Chair of the Jamaican Private Sector Organisation, Debra Fraser, CEO of Caribbean Human Resources Solutions and Audrey Tugwell Henry, Executive Vice President of Retail Banking at Scotiabank.
