Scientists from the United States Geological Survey make a routine visit to the summit of Kilauea volcano to perform maintenance work on the webcam and make general observations on August 20, 2024. Recent InSAR imagery shows continued expansion of the middle rift zone of Kilauea volcano.

This map shows recent deformation at Kilauea Volcano from August 7 to 19, 2024. The data was acquired by the European Space Agency’s Sentinel-1A satellite. Colored stripes indicate areas of ground deformation, with more stripes indicating more deformation. Each color cycle represents 2.8 centimeters (1.1 inches) of ground motion. The circular feature east of Makaopuhi Crater in the East Rift Zone represents expansion due to underground magma accumulation. The arrows in the upper left corner indicate the direction of the satellite orbit (arrow) and the direction of observation (bar).
