If there had been any doubts before, the authenticity of the statements of Olmedo López and Snyder Pinilla is no longer in doubt. Moreover, according to the information known this week, it has been proven that the operation of robbing the UNGRD and bribing congressmen was carried out on the orders of ministers and senior officials of the Nariño House.
However, new evidence clearly shows the responsibility of the Treasury Department, the then-Presidential Executive Director, and the current Director of National Intelligence.
The summary is simple: a bribery operation was launched against key deputies and senators from the Presidency, the Interior and the Finance Ministries, including the presidents of two companies, the chairman of the Commission of Accusations and the chairman of the Public Credit Commission. To do this, they approved the addition of hundreds of billions of dollars to the UNGRD and instructed it to provide funds and contracts to parliamentarians. It was also ordered to transfer public funds to ensure that the National Liberation Army remained on the “total peace” position.
Some elements cannot be ignored. One, Olmedo has always been central to Petro: he was exM19, when he was a candidate of the “Decentes” list, Petro supported and promoted his candidacy, López was the most important individual donor to Petrista’s 2018 campaign, and it was Petro himself who appointed him to the UNGRD. Second, when López was suspended from the Office of the Comptroller General, Petro made a public statement defending him. Petro never fired him. After the tanker scam came to light, López resigned. Third, Olmedo and Snyder must have received orders from high up in government, as actually happened. Fourth, it is also implausible that the relevant ministers and senior officials issued these orders without the knowledge of Petro himself, the biggest beneficiary. Fifth, he was the favored man: the whole operation was designed to facilitate the approval of his projects in Congress, obtain the debts he needed, ensure his impunity in the Commission of Charges, and tie down the ELN so that his “total peace” does not fail miserably.
These events add to the long list of scandals surrounding his family, inner circle and campaign, and Petro should resign. In another country, there would be an outcry from citizens and the media demanding his resignation. But this is Colombia, where since Samper, moral and judicial parameters have shattered into a thousand pieces.
