Minister of Education and Research Dan Perciun announced the news in a Facebook Live broadcast. He stressed that the decision to give educational institutions the right to choose was made because many opinions were received from parents and religious groups. The minister explained that those students who start the school year on September 1 will receive an extra day of vacation, zdg.md reported.

“Those who wish to start the school year on Sunday, typically we’re talking about a ceremony that lasts about an hour, will be given an extra day off if they choose that option, and teachers will receive pay and a day off because they are willing to work on Sunday and be with students for an hour or an hour and a half in a ceremony that celebrates the start of the new school year,” Dan Perchun said.

According to him, the idea of starting the school year on Sunday, September 1, is to “ensure that next year, instead of having sporadic holidays of three or two days as the calendar shows, we will have five days of holidays for students, from Monday to Friday, in the fall and spring, taking into account important calendar dates, Easter and other holidays that will occur in 2024-2025.”
