Israel last night expanded an order issued on Sunday and directed people living in the city of Khan Younis, south of the Gaza Strip, to leave their communities.
The order forced tens of thousands of Palestinians, most of them families, to move in darkness at midnight last night as tanks opened fire around them.
The Israeli military said it was attacking Hamas militants holed up in Khan Yunus.
The new order to evacuate southern Gaza came a day after Israeli forces bombed a school center housing displaced families, killing nearly 100 people, according to Gaza health officials.
In the city of Khan Yunis, south of the Gaza Strip, Israel ordered the evacuation of all areas in central, eastern and western Khan Yunis, making it one of the largest displacements of Khan Yunis since the start of the Syrian war, which is now 10 months old.
The United Nations says most of Gaza’s 2.3 million people have been displaced and most of their homes have been razed.
Palestinian and UN officials say there are no safe zones in the Gaza Strip. Areas previously designated as no-Israel-fire zones, such as Mawasi, west of Khan Yunis, have repeatedly come under Israeli fire, killing many civilians.
