Iswadi Moni had asked the Sarawak Party Alliance to hand over several state seats to PKR to show its sincerity in joining the coalition government.
(FMT) – Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) leaders have dismissed calls by Sarawak PKR strategic director Iswadi Moni for GPS to hand over several state seats to PKR to show the alliance’s sincerity in working in a unity government.
Parti Pribumi Bersatu (PBB) deputy president Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah scoffed at Iswadi’s proposal, saying Sarawak PKR cannot expect to get seats for free as it had failed to win them in the past.
Karim added that the fact that Sarawak PKR failed to win even a single state seat in the 2021 state election was proof that Sarawakians had rejected the party.
“Sarawak has its own Sarawak-based political parties and we know the problems Sarawakians face. We don’t need all these political parties coming from other parts of Malaysia.
No doubt they can contest (in Sarawak) on the grounds of democracy. But democracy can be interpreted in many ways. If a candidate wins without fighting, that is also democracy. Be realistic, he said.
Karim, who is also a state minister, also challenged Iswadi to contest the next state election if he is truly confident that PKR will have the support of the people of Sarawak.
The five-term state assemblyman said he would be happy to contest the Asah Jaya seat against the Petra Jaya PKR chief if Pakatan Harapan decides to field him again.
“I invited him in the past but he didn’t want to. So, I invited him again.
I am not being arrogant but I am curious to see where he stands and how well he is accepted by the people of Sarawak.
On Tuesday, Karim warned PKR not to jeopardise the cooperation of PGK under the coalition government by contesting the next state election, especially given that PGK currently controls the state assembly.
He insisted that GPS stood with the unity government but warned that this unity must not disappear during the elections.
In response, Iswadi said Karim should discuss and consult with Sarawak PKR instead of making such a statement publicly.
Iswadi also said that if the Sarawak Party Alliance does not want People’s Justice Party, Democratic Action Party and Amanah to participate in the state election, several seats should be given to these parties.
