Irrigation, Wildlife and Forest Conservation Minister Pavitra Wanniarachchi yesterday decided to support President Ranil Wickremesinghe in the upcoming presidential election.

Minister Wanniarachki said she will support President Ranil Wickremesinghe, who will contest the upcoming presidential election as an independent candidate while remaining in the Sri Lanka Popular Front. In a statement, Wanniarachki said that after an unprecedented economic crisis, the country has achieved remarkable stability under the strong leadership of President Ranil Wickremesinghe.

She said members of the Sri Lanka Popular Front party in Ratnapura district had informed her of their support for President Ranil Wickremesinghe in the upcoming presidential election.

“I have always followed the policy of listening to the people of Ratnapura district and the party members with whom I take major political decisions,” the minister said in a statement.

“I took this political decision after lengthy discussions with party members, academics, social activists and other political parties that work with me politically.

“It is a well-known fact that in 2022, our motherland fell into serious instability economically, politically and socially.

In order to save the unstable situation that existed at the time, many political groups, led by the Sri Lanka People’s Front, worked to appoint Ranil Wickremesinghe as president.

“With the trust that political forces like the Sri Lanka Popular Front have placed in Ranil Wickremesinghe, our homeland has achieved considerable stability.

I think at this moment we need a government leader who can make direct and realistic decisions to further build our country, which we have made great sacrifices to stabilize,” she said.
