Former Justice Minister Zeid Ibrahim said Islamic parties must prove they can provide an Islamic system that guarantees equality for all.
(FMT) – Former Law Minister Zaid Ibrahim has asked PAS to “change the party’s image” by providing a “credible and substantive policy narrative” to gain the support of all Malaysians.
The former Kota Baru MP said in a post on X that PAS has the potential to lead the country but must win the support of all sections of society to gain power.
“At the moment, (Islam) has no interest in seeking support from non-Muslims in dealing with contemporary issues,” he said, adding that “the party still scares many people about how it will govern the country.”
Zaid said PAS should consider forming a serious alliance with non-Malay parties such as MCA.
“PAS has the support of the Malays; they only need to claim that they can provide an Islamic system that guarantees equality for all.”
Zaid said all Malaysians would follow credible and sincere Malay groups and work together to eliminate all forms of discrimination.
However, he said PAS needed to change its “image” and “behaviour” and respect the rights and customs of non-Malays, adding that it must also give up its obsession with “banning everything they disagree with”.
“Creating a kinder and gentler society. Providing support and assistance to all sectors of society, especially the poorer ones,” Zeid said.
He also called on Islamist parties to promote “true Islamic justice” and end preferential treatment enjoyed by certain sections of society.
“People are tired of discrimination, hegemony and differential treatment between different classes and those in power.
“To convey to Malaysians the message left by the Prophet Muhammad. Can PAS take on this mission?
“A political party must have a plan to change our political, economic and judicial systems. A party that only promises heaven but says nothing about this life will not work.”
PAS won a record 43 parliamentary seats in the 15th general election, mainly in Malay-majority constituencies.
Currently, PAS, Bersatu (25 seats) and Muda (1 seat) form the opposition in the Dewan Rakyat, while the government, a coalition of Pakatan Harapan, Barisan Nasional and East Malaysian parties, controls 153 seats.
PAS briefly held federal power during the Perikatan Nasional coalition’s leadership of the government from March 2020 to August 2021.
Last October, party president Abdul Hadi Awang said the party must work hard to win over non-Malay and non-Muslim voters in the 16th general election after securing the support of the majority Malays.
