The president of the Paris 2024 Olympic Organizing Committee, Tony Estanget, on Monday formally sent a letter to South Sudan’s Minister of Youth and Sports, Dr. Joseph Geng Akshi, apologizing for playing the Sudanese national anthem during the South Sudanese basketball team’s game.
He said that during the basketball match between Puerto Rico and South Sudan at the Pierre Mauroy Stadium on July 28, the South Sudanese national anthem was mistakenly played instead of the Sudanese national anthem when the teams entered the field due to a mistake by the Paris 2024 World Cup football team.
“After realizing the mistake, the Paris 2024 team played the South Sudanese national anthem. We would like to express our sincere apologies to the entire South Sudanese delegation and the people of South Sudan in general, and the basketball team in particular, for the great inconvenience this has caused,” Estanguet wrote. “The Paris 2024 organizing committee is committed to doing its utmost and providing the most meticulous attention so that this mistake does not happen again in the future.”
He added: “Please rest assured that we will do our utmost to accompany South Sudan in the best possible conditions.”
South Sudan’s national basketball team, the Shining Stars, defeated Puerto Rico 90-79 in their first match of the Paris Olympics.
South Sudan will face the United States in Group C of the 2024 Olympics on Wednesday, July 31, in what is expected to be a tight contest.
