JAYAPURA, Papua (ANTARA) – A Papuan armed rebel was shot in the thigh by joint personnel from the Operation Katensi Task Force and the Nabire District Police Station in Central Papua on Sunday afternoon, a police officer said.
Brigadier Faizal Rahmadani, head of the special task force, said that despite suffering from gunshot wounds and bleeding profusely, Basokha Raviya tried to escape and attacked the police officers who arrested him.
In a press statement issued on Sunday (July 8), Rahmadani stated that Raviya was shot in Topo village, Uwapa district, Nabire city and later died of severe bleeding.
The task force chief said Ravia belonged to a separatist group led by Undius Kogoya that operates in the Intanjaya district of Central Papua. He added that Ravia’s body was kept at the Nabire Public Hospital morgue.
He said Raviya, a resident of Soangama village in Hitadipah district, Intanjaya City, has been involved in four criminal cases in Intanjaya and Paniai districts in Central Papua this year.
On January 20, 2024, Lawiya set fire to the residence of a civil servant in Mamba Village, Sugapa town, Intan Jaya. On May 6, he was involved in a raid on the home of the village chief of Odiyai village in Paniai.
On May 22, he was shot at Madi Road in Uwibutu Village, Paniai Timur Subdistrict.
Rahmadani said that after that, on June 11, he participated in the murder of Rusli in Kopo Village, Paniai Dongmur Subdistrict, Paniai District, Central Papua Province.
In recent years, armed insurgent groups have frequently adopted hit-and-run tactics against Indonesian security personnel and launched terrorist activities against civilians in areas such as Intanjaya, Nduga and Pukak, inciting panic among the people.
Targets of such terrorist acts have included construction workers, motorcycle taxi drivers, teachers, students, street food vendors and civilian aircraft.
On February 7, 2023, New Zealand pilot Philip Mark Mertens was abducted by an armed group led by Aegianus Kogoa. He was flying a plane belonging to Indonesian airline Susi Air when the armed group held him captive. Shortly after the plane landed in the Nduga district, members of the group set fire to his plane.
On October 16, 2023, Papuan separatists attacked several traditional gold miners in the Yahukimo district of Papua New Guinea Province, killing seven people.
Afterwards, on April 10, 2024, Second Lieutenant Oktovianus Sogalrey, commander of the 1703-04 Aladid Divisional Military Command, was shot dead by Papuan rebels in the Paniai District of Central Papua.
