The Palau community in the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI) is requesting funds to host the Palau Concert Grant event scheduled for August 10, 2024.
In a letter to Senate President Hokkons Baules, Thelma Madracheluib Mizer, Vice President of the Palau Community Association (PCA) of the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, thanked Olbiil Era Kelulau (OEK) for the recent approval of $100,000 in funding for the Bai project.
The letter also stated that further support was needed for their upcoming concerts.
“This enjoyable and memorable event is a testament to the commitment of our members and the community at large,” the letter reads. “However, to make this event a success, we need sufficient funds to meet our financial needs.”
She said the PCA was grateful for any donation or level of support. Donations would be acknowledged during the concert and on the association’s social media platforms.
Meanwhile, some Palauans say the practice has become unbearable. While Palau cannot fully meet its own needs, such as providing adequate health care locally, fully providing and equipping public security, funding education, and having to piece together funds to meet basic needs, the Palau government is providing funds to Palauans who choose to live and work outside of Palau to pay taxes in the communities where they live. Given that it is election season, the government will continue to use its hard-earned tax dollars to support Palauans abroad.
