Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem won a historic gold medal in the javelin event at the 2024 Paris Olympics, defeating India’s 2020 Tokyo Olympics gold medalist Neeraj Chopra.

Nadeem arrived in Pakistan late on Friday night, and news of his victory sparked joy among his countrymen, with congratulatory messages pouring in from national leaders and huge celebrations in his usually quiet village of Meenchanu.

His brother said in a statement to the media: “At first, he made his own spears out of branches and attached iron tips to them, and the fields in our village were used as training grounds.”.

Things improved when Nadeem joined the local electricity company, which had its own sports facilities.

According to his mother, the Pakistani government agreed to his request and intervened to improve the situation and sent him three spears of international standards from South Africa.

Nadim wrote on the “X” platform: “This medal is my gift to the nation on the occasion of Independence Day (August 14).”.

Maryam Nawaz, the prime minister of Nadeem’s own Punjab province, announced 100 million rupees ($359,195) as a financial reward for what she called her “hard work.”
