Pakistan’s top consulate held the day’s commemorations in a low-key manner, attracting the Pakistani community and other dignitaries from the country.
In his speech, Honorary Consul of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan in The Gambia, His Excellency Kaba Krubali, stressed the importance of the day.
He said that this day holds a special significance in their hearts as on this historic day an unprecedented freedom struggle culminated in the creation of the state of Pakistan.
“The struggle for an independent homeland represents an idea whose time has come; an idea rooted in self-assertion and hope for a better future. A nation that will enable our people to realize their potential and live in peace and abundance in accordance with their glorious traditions, spirit, culture and values,” he said.
He also stressed: “There are two points worth noting in this regard. First, unity is one of the most striking features of independent Pakistan, which was born out of diverse cultures, languages and nationalities.
“August 14 is not only a day to celebrate political freedom, but also a testament to the nation’s ability to come together to overcome great challenges. The green of Pakistan’s flag represents the Muslim majority, while the white symbolizes the religious minorities, reflecting the principle of unity in diversity that continues to shape the nation’s identity. The spirit of independence continues to inspire Pakistanis to overcome challenges and strive to build a nation that embodies the principles of justice, equality, and prosperity for all.”
The Vice Chairman of the Pakistani Community in The Gambia, Mohammed Zaheer Ahmed, expressed happiness over the event and expressed sincere gratitude on behalf of fellow Gambians to President Barrow for creating a conducive environment for Pakistanis living in The Gambia.
“We have Pakistanis working in Gambia’s hospitals, business sectors, etc.,” he said. “This is all thanks to the friendly environment created by the Gambian government and the bilateral relations between the two countries. We call on both countries to continue to improve relations.”
He added that the symbolic day filled the hearts and spirits of Pakistanis living in The Gambia with great self-respect and patriotic fervour.
