A restaurant that has been in business in Hoboken for more than 26 years recently received approval to open a two-story speakeasy and operate under the name “Baby Girl.”
On June 27, the Hoboken Planning Commission held a special meeting and approved a major renovation of a former tattoo parlor at 938 Washington St. The shop is directly connected to Anthony David, a popular restaurant owned by chef Anthony Pino, at the corner of 10th and Bloomfield streets.
Anthony David’s has been approved to expand its liquor license to the adjacent tattoo parlor, which will operate under a different name. The restaurant has received a conditional use permit to operate a secondary bar on the property, which will be located on the first floor and partially visible from the street.
Taking advantage of Hoboken’s recent transformation, which allows for underground retail in non-flood zones, the property’s basement will feature a 24-seat speakeasy bar accessible by stairs. The space will be a true basement, with no windows, designed to provide a low-key venue for cocktails and company.
The restaurant, tentatively called Baby Girl, will serve tapas and cocktails using ingredients sourced from Anthony David’s kitchen next door, according to Mr. Pino’s testimony at the meeting.
Jersey Digs asked Anthony David about Baby Girl’s plans but has not received a response. The planned bar, in true speakeasy style, may try to keep a low profile, as submitted plans indicate that signage for the business will be limited to a small emblem projected from the awning.
While it’s unclear when Baby Girl opened, speakeasies are popping up all over Hudson County these days.
