Mark Sutcliffe was born at Riverside Hospital to John and Florence, both Canadian immigrants. Mark has lived in Ottawa his entire life. He was elected Mayor of Ottawa on October 24, 2022.
Prior to entering municipal politics, Mark was an award-winning journalist, entrepreneur, volunteer, and community activist.
For more than 30 years, Mark has covered politics and current events as a broadcaster for CFRA, CityNews, Rogers TV and CPAC, and as executive editor and columnist for the Ottawa Citizen.
Mark started his first business at age 19. In 1995, he co-founded Ottawa Business Magazine and has started and led several small and medium-sized businesses. He has served as a coach, mentor and advisor to over a hundred CEOs, entrepreneurs, small business owners and non-profit leaders.
Mark has always been a passionate volunteer and fundraiser. He has served as Chair of the Board of Directors for the United Way of Ottawa, the Ottawa Board of Trade, OrKidstra, the Greater Canadian Theatre Company, the Ottawa Community Housing Foundation and Run Ottawa. He has also served on the Board of Directors for Algonquin College, Invest in Ottawa, Kind Ottawa, the Ottawa International Writers Festival and the Royal Ottawa Hospital Foundation. In 2016, he was inducted into the Order of Ottawa and named United Way Ambassador of the Year in recognition of his contributions to the city. In 2018, Mark gave a highly acclaimed TEDx Talk on the role of luck in his life.
Mark is an avid marathon runner who has raised more than $250,000 for Ottawa charities through fundraising runs. He is the author of four books, including “The Long Road to Boston,” which chronicles his journey to qualify for the Boston Marathon, which he completed in 2015 and 2018. Mark and his wife, Ginny, have three children.
