The future of Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen has divided fans and friends over what the next step in his career will be.

Even before news broke that the striker was willing to play for the Saudi Professional League, speculation about his next move began, with friends and fans on social media engaging in a factual “war” over his transfer and contract terms.
While Nigerian journalist and known ally of Ousmane Adebayo Sulaiman (@PoojaMedia) has obtained details about the player’s transfer speculation and insisted that the striker will not be heading to Chelsea this summer, others have claimed that the forward will be heading to England from Italy.
The debate got more heated on Thursday when Oma Akatugba, a Nigerian journalist based in Germany, posted on his X account that the Nigerian Super Eagles striker could be moving to Chelsea.
“The transfer rumours for Victor Osimhen seem to be leaning towards a move to Chelsea. According to my sources (not Victor or anyone in his camp), as of 11pm last night he had agreed a €350,000-a-week wage deal with Chelsea.
“Initially, he demanded a salary of €500,000 per week, but Chelsea convinced him to accept a lower salary. Chelsea fans can’t be happy just yet, though, as this farce is far from over. Saudi clubs are still in the race and are offering a higher price,” Akatugba wrote.
The sports journalist’s revelation about the player’s future caused a stir on social media, with his friends and fans taking turns to give their opinions.
Reacting to Akatugba’s post, a well-known friend and social media influencer of Osimhen, @the_smallie, hit back, claiming that the journalist’s statement was not true.
Ousmane’s friend wrote: “He never asked for €500,000 and Chelsea never offered anything close to €350,000. An accredited UEFA journalist should not be spreading information like this.”
Another influencer @TheTifeFab wrote: “This is a complete lie. Chelsea never offered Victor €350,000 and Victor never asked for €500,000. Let’s stop spreading false information or unconfirmed figures.”
Furthermore, the striker’s friend @_AsiwajuLerry wrote in response to Akatugba’s tweet: “This guy has fallen out with Victor Osimhen and most of the Super Eagles players and hurls accusations at them every chance he gets. He quotes a ton of outrageous things that are far from the truth just to frame the players. An absolute disgrace to journalists.”
X user @Iamadaba, who supported @the_smallie, wrote: “You people just hate Osihmen for no reason. Because what the hell is all this hot takes and nonsense? Lowkey you really wish you had someone like him around you but since he has nothing to do with you then all that follows is hate and agenda.”
Well-known social commentator @Letter_to_Jack accused @the_smallie, saying that although Osman’s friends tried to set the record straight, it did not reflect well on the player.
According to him, I understand that you want to correct the record about your friend, which is admirable, but this is too much detailed information for a contract that is still in the final stages of negotiation.
He added: “It doesn’t reflect well on Osimhen at all. Future employers, especially in Europe, will take that into account. Ornstein or Fab will just quote ‘FALSE’ and they won’t elaborate until the story is done or the transfer window closes – now it’s just a matter of hours.
“Why do you think only trusted journalists get the scoop on transfer deals and contract details and leak it? Do you think relatives, brothers and friends of other football players can’t come and attack fake news about them? Do you think close friends and relatives of other players don’t know about their decisions on transfers days before the news breaks? In football, it’s either the player, his agent or a trusted journalist.
“Any source beyond that (especially an unknown friend) indicates that the player camp is leaning towards leaks, which is never a good sign. Everyone should work with Pooja to expose Omar’s lies. Do not let your emotions control you and affect your friends negatively.”
This was also confirmed by another fan @Letter_to_Jack, who tweeted: “It’s ridiculous how they don’t think so. At the moment, I think these people are part of Osihmen’s problem. How on earth do you argue with a journalist about private contract details, ‘I’m a friend, let me say what I know’. In reality, he just had to say ‘fake’.”
However, Akatouba stood by his statement in his response after news of Osimhen’s move to Saudi Arabia became public, adding that the player was seeking a higher salary.
He wrote: “Chelsea can’t pay so he has to ask for money. But idiots say he can’t ask for 500k when in the UK people make close to 800k a month before tax? When I know my story I won’t back down. They can hire you to come here and make a fool of yourself, it’s your choice. I’m working, you’re making noise.”
