The OSCE Parliamentary Assembly’s Standing Committee today overwhelmingly re-elected Secretary-General Roberto Montella for a further five-year term, following his unanimous approval by the Bureau of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly in April. His new term will begin on 1 January 2026 and end on 31 December 2030.

The Secretary-General is responsible for managing the affairs of the General Assembly, ensuring the efficiency of the Secretariat and supervising its offices in Copenhagen and Vienna, and implementing the decisions of the Bureau, the Standing Committees and the General Assembly. He reports to the President, the Bureau and the Standing Committees at the annual session of the General Assembly and other meetings.

Following his re-election today, the Secretary-General said he was honoured to continue serving the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly. “OSCE Parliamentarians serve a billion people from Vancouver to Vladivostok and they play a vital role in these difficult times. I am honoured to support these Parliamentarians in their important work and I thank them for their trust in me,” said Montella.

Montella served as Director of Presidential Administration at the OSCE International Secretariat for the Palestinian Authority and served in OSCE field missions in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo and Serbia and Montenegro, performing a range of advisory, peacebuilding and management functions. He also served as Director of the OSCE Regional Office in South Serbia and Director of the European Centre for Minority Issues in Kosovo.

The Secretary-General first took office in January 2016 and was re-elected by the Standing Committee in 2019 for a second five-year term, effective January 1, 2021.
