Manchin: I’ve seen both sides kill good legislation for political reasons. You can check it out Back to 2013We had a bipartisan immigration bill. 68 or 69 senators passed it. It went to the House. John Boehner was the speaker. John was a friend of mine. I called him. I said, “John, can you get it to the House? It’s going to pass. You know it’s going to pass, John.” It did a great job. We secured the border. We had a path to citizenship that was a very, very difficult path. You wouldn’t be fighting the same battles you’re having today. John looked at me and said, “Joe, I can’t do this.” He said,Eric Cantor Just got defeated in Richmond by a far-right extremist who said, ‘Eric Cantor supports this legislation, so he supports amnesty,’ so he defeated him.” So the rest of the Republican caucus is scared.
And then there was Roe v. Wade. It had been precedent for 50 years. We learned how to deal with it. And with the Dobbs decision, at the most divisive time in our country, they struck it down. So you would normally think, “Why can’t we codify Roe v. Wade? Just codify it.” So Susan Collins, my dear friend Lisa Murkowski, and I, you know, we have a bipartisan legislation that just codifies it. That’s it. It will not become precedent. It will become the law of the land, and every state will follow it.
Well, the Democrats were trying to pass a piece of legislation, and I was sitting in caucus one day, and they were trying to explain that we were codifying Roe v. Wade. And when I read the bill, it went a lot further than just codifying it. And I asked a question in the caucus, “Are you trying to make people believe that all you’re doing here is codifying Roe v. Wade, which we’ve already discussed?” And I said, “It’s a lot more than that.” And I walked out and I thought, “This is crazy. You guys are crazy.” And they voted to pass the bill anyway, and I voted against it. That’s what happened. Politics killed it. They wanted to please the base.
I try to get people to explain. They come to me and I say, “Do you understand? Only 23% All of America is Democrats, only 25% are Republicans, and 51% are nonpartisan like me? ” I said, “You can’t win without a center. Why do you keep pressuring the extremists? They’re fine. They eat well. But you can’t win that way.” I just couldn’t understand why we couldn’t find that moderate center where people said, “Yeah, that’s how I live. That’s what I expect from you.” And it’s not exciting. You expect us to do the right thing. No one gets excited when someone talks about common sense. No one goes to a fundraiser to give money. But if you say something stupid and crazy, I guarantee you’ll be drowned out.
