6:25 The European Union’s top diplomat, Josep Borrell, called on Wednesday for restrictions on Ukraine to be lifted so they can strike Russian targets using weapons donated by their allies, Politico reported.
“The Kursk offensive in Ukraine is a blow to Russian President Vladimir Putin’s narrative,” Borrell wrote on X Network.
He believes that lifting restrictions under international law would have several important effects:
- It will strengthen Ukraine’s self-defense by eliminating Russian safe havens for attacks and bombing of Ukrainian cities and infrastructure.
- It will save lives and limit the damage in Ukraine.
- Help advance peace efforts.
Kiev is pushing hard for donors to lift restrictions on the use of long-range weapons against Russian targets — a ban imposed by countries like the United States and Britain for fear of crossing Russian leader Vladimir Putin’s red lines. But the ongoing aggression against Russia in Ukraine undermines that argument, Politico reported.
“If our partners lift all restrictions on long-range capabilities, Ukraine won’t have to actually enter the Kursk region,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said earlier this week. Other allies, such as Denmark and Sweden, have said Ukraine can use the donated weapons as it sees fit, Politico added.
