8:55 National celebrations for the 80th anniversary of the Slovak National Uprising (SNP) continue in Banská Bystrica on Thursday with a full-day event. The ceremony will include a solemn wreath laying, ceremonial speeches, musical performances, a military parade, a gala and a final fireworks display.
The SNP anniversary celebrations will take place at the SNP monument and the park below it, which will be open to the public from 9:00 am. Visitors will be able to find accompanying activities by the ministries and various organisations within their scope. “There are many attractions, a stand of the Military History Club, displays of light, heavy, static and dynamic equipment. Cynologists, hippopotamologists will perform and you will experience an adventure straight from the cells,” said the organisers of the celebrations.
The official part of the celebrations will begin at 10:00am with a solemn wreath-laying ceremony at the SNP Memorial. The area will open to the public at 11:00am, when the ceremony programme with speeches from the guests will begin. In the afternoon, the celebrations will continue with a musical and cultural programme.
For the first time, the SNP celebrations will include a military oath ceremony, with nearly 600 graduates of basic military training taking the oath. The climax of the event will be a military parade at 5:00 pm, followed by an evening show at 8:30 pm. The celebrations of the SNP’s 80th anniversary in Banská Bystrica will end with a fireworks display at 10:00 pm.
Traffic restrictions are also in place in Banská Bystrica for the celebrations, and several streets and parking lots in the city center will be closed throughout the day. From 1:00 p.m., the I/66 embankment road will also be closed, and from 2:00 p.m., restrictions will also be imposed on the I/69 road and the R1 highway. Ten temporary parking lots have been reserved for the public in the city. These are parking lots near large shopping malls and department stores or in Mičinská cesta and Štiavničky. The city will provide a shuttle service from Radvan Park to the city center and back for visitors attending the celebrations.
