The Statistics Institute (Ispf) announced that in June 2024, the number of tourists to French Polynesia fell by 2.5% year-on-year to 23,363, 610 fewer than in June 2023.
Clients from North America still make up the majority, accounting for 48% of the total monthly hires. Compared to June 2023, the number of North American citizens increased for the first time since the beginning of the year (+1%).
The number of floating accommodation clients increased, thanks to the development of source markets and the rebound in tourist numbers from the European market, while the land-based workforce decreased for more than a year. The decline in land use concerns the number of tourists in commercial land accommodation (-4%) and non-commercial land clients (-10%). The decline in land-based business personnel had a negative impact of 2.8 percentage points on the performance for the month, due to a sharp drop in land-based personnel from the Pacific region (-38%), two thirds of which is due to the cessation of flights from New Caledonia and the consequent absence of these clients.
The number of tourist nights this month is down 1.5% compared to June 2023, but is up 5% over the same period since the beginning of the year.
In the first six months, more than 123,000 tourists (+0.6% compared to the first half of 2023) came to French Polynesia, the highest number of tourists in this period. This result is entirely explained by the good performance of French (+7%) and European (+18%) customers, which more than compensated for the loss of 6,000 tourists from North America (-9.5%) and the Pacific (-5%) in more than a year.
Classified hotel occupancy rate fell by 2%
Overall, ISPF still believes that the decline in attendance was primarily due to a decrease in the number of commercial land lodgings. Classified hotels saw a 2% decline in occupancy, small family hotels also saw a 2% decline in occupancy (-4%), while vacation rental hotels saw an increase in occupancy of 2%.
It must be said that given the current prices of international hotels, we better understand why some people would look elsewhere. A few days before the opening of the Papeete Tourism Fair, we got our hands on the hotel directory for the Pearl Resort. One of many examples… Needless to say, it was exciting!
Direction Tikehau Hotel has been remodeled to improve its status: depending on the season, overnight accommodation costs between 40,500 Fcfp and 54,000 Fcfp for two people, including breakfast. Again, you need to book a minimum of three nights. The cheapest lounge price in Bora Bora will set you back 95,000 CFA francs per night for a garden villa with pool. Always for two people, transfers included, and only on certain dates.
