Who stays at home?

Older people are more likely to stay home than younger people: A total of 44% of those aged 75 and over said they had not taken a vacation, compared with just 12% of those aged 15 to 24. Income also affects the results: Among the lowest-income 25%, Household income In the first quartile, 38% stayed home, compared with 8% in the highest income group. In addition, people in single-person households or single-parent households were more likely than people in other household types not to go on vacation.

More than 33% of people aged 15 and over who did not go on vacation in 2023 said they did not like going on vacation and would rather stay at home. Other reasons included health and not having money to go on vacation. Staying at home for safety reasons or not having time due to work, school or family responsibilities were the least mentioned reasons for not going on vacation.

Health is the main reason why older people stay at home

For homebodies aged 65 and over, 43% of respondents said health was the main reason they didn’t go on vacation. For those aged 45 to 64, the main reason they didn’t go on vacation was that they liked staying at home. The main reasons were: busy work or school, or lack of money, especially for those under 45. 37% of respondents in this age group mentioned these two reasons.

Lack of money is particularly prevalent among those under 45 and those on the lowest incomes, with 44% of those on the lowest incomes saying they have not taken a holiday for this reason. For those on higher incomes (4th quartile) and those on middle incomes (2nd and 3rd quartiles), the percentage is much lower (around 20%).
