“One day we will wake up and Paramaribo will be 1.5 to 2 meters under water,” said PALU chairman Henk Ramnandanlal.

Ramnandanlal issued this stark warning in response to Paramaribo’s current policy on drainage and the too-easy issuance of subdivision permits without adequate consideration of climatic conditions.

Ramnandanlal expressed his grave concerns about the situation in an interview with LIM FM. “The country needs a complete redesign,” he said.

He pointed out that Paramaribo has many dead-end roads, which were built without good drainage in mind.

Ram Nandan Lal stressed that the lack of an effective drainage system posed a major threat to the city and its residents.

“If we don’t intervene quickly and take structural measures, we will face severe flooding that will not only destroy infrastructure but also lives.”

He called on governments and relevant agencies to take immediate action to implement sustainable solutions to prevent future disasters.

Affected residents of Tourtonne 5 and 6 and Maretraite 5 and 6 in Paramaribo explained to GFC News this week that they are very disappointed with the government policy.

“The government has not taken any measures to deal with the flooding. The water is not being drained out at all,” they said.
