France will host the Olympic and Paralympic Games from July 26 to August 11, 2024, and from August 28 to September 8, 2024, respectively.

An (almost) unprecedented sporting event in France
In 2024, France will host the Summer Olympics for the first time in 100 years, and the Paralympics for the first time. There will be 15,000 athletes, more than 9,000 accredited journalists and nearly 1.5 million spectators from all over the world. The event will attract a large number of foreign viewers, with an estimated television audience of 4 billion.
The Games will feature events in the most emblematic and spectacular locations of Paris and the Ile-de-France region (Champ de Mars, the Grand Palais, Les Invalides, Place de la Concorde, Versailles, etc.). Competitions will be held in eight cities (Paris, Nantes, Bordeaux, Lille, Lyon, Saint-Etienne, Nice and Marseille), as well as a sailing competition in Marseille and a surfing competition in Tahiti.
The Olympics will feature 28 Olympic sports, plus four additional sports: sport climbing, skateboarding, surfing and breakdancing, while Paralympic athletes will compete in 22 sports.
The Games will be a unique celebration of sport and Olympism, open to as many people as possible. For the first time, the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games on July 26, 2024 will not be held in a stadium, but will take place across the Seine in the heart of Paris. The Paralympic Opening Ceremony will take place partly on the Champs-Elysées and on the Place de la Concorde.
A unique diplomatic networking operation for the Olympic and Paralympic Games will be a unique opportunity to promote France, its
territory and its values. That is why, ever since Paris was awarded the 2024 bid, the French diplomatic service has been fully supporting the project.
For months, the French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs has been working on the organization of this major sporting event:
• MEAE plays an important consular role, procuring visas for tens of thousands of Olympic and Paralympic family members,
• In terms of protocol, it will host many of the heads of state and government who will be travelling to France for the Olympic Games. More than 100 of these VIPs are expected to attend the opening ceremony of the Games on July 26, 2024.
• 146 embassies have joined the “Terre de Jeux 2024” initiative, reflecting the passion and ambition of the diplomatic network to contribute to the success of the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games and to share this project with the 2.5 million French people living abroad. Some 136 of these embassies (over 80% of the French diplomatic network) organized a huge “Around the World Relay Race” on March 14, 2024:
24-hour sporting action around the world! Just weeks before the start of the Olympic Games, this event highlights the efforts of the French diplomatic network and its determination to continue to put sport at the heart of our external action.
Sustainability and restraint at the heart of the Olympics
The Paris 2024 Organising Committee has made a number of strong environmental and social commitments, including:
• Strive to achieve carbon neutrality at the Olympic Games, with the goal of reducing the carbon footprint by half compared to the previous decade and offsetting the CO2 emissions generated by the Games.
• Use 100% renewable energy in Olympic venues.
• Ensure that 95% of the infrastructure used is existing or temporary, with the goal that all temporary infrastructure can be reused or recycled.
• Ensure clean travel solutions for athletes and spectators, in particular that all venues are accessible by public transport.
• Ensure full gender equality among eligible athletes for the Olympic Games.
• Stimulate economic activity by creating 150,000 jobs and involving more than 1,200 SMEs and micro-enterprises in the procurement process.
• Improve the economic attractiveness of the Seine-Saint-Denis department, which received 80% of the investments and the majority of the Olympic facilities.
Furthermore, in 2019, the French government adopted the Olympic and Paralympic Legacy Plan, which aims to ensure that the Olympic and Paralympic Games help improve the lives of the French people in many areas: economy, education, employment, healthcare, access for people with disabilities, sport, culture and the environment. The Ministries of Europe and Foreign Affairs are assisting in the implementation of this mechanism.
