Waikato Regional Council has issued a warning that the water in the Ohinemuri River is bright orange.
It is claimed that the discoloration of the water could be caused by a mine collapse and the water should be treated as a pollutant.
The incident was reported to the city council around 3 p.m.
Council staff are at the riverside assessing the discoloration of the water.
Senior incident response officer Robert Isaac said crews had not yet determined the source of the discoloration, and the water appeared to be flowing into the Ohinemuri River downstream from the Waitaveta River.
“Until we can identify the source of the water, we need to treat this as a worst-case scenario because we have reports of people standing in the water.
“If this is an old mine that has exploded then people should not be using or touching the water.”
Other situations could include the collapse of forestry dams or other erosion.
