(CNS): OfReg has banned several stores and vendors in the Cayman Islands, including Cost.U.Less and Shop Smart Cayman, from selling satellite internet terminals, claiming it is for consumer protection. But not everyone agrees with the decision, given that the service provided by existing communications companies is spotty, costly and often of poor quality.
The utility regulator has issued cease-and-desist notices to the businesses because officials said they did not have the “required authorization to legally import and resell the equipment.”
The terminals connect to Elon Musk’s Starlink, but the project does not currently have a license to provide service in the Cayman Islands.
“Anyone who purchases these terminals will find themselves unable to legally put them into use,” OfReg said in a press release. “Our action ensures that consumers do not end up purchasing devices that
A service is unavailable.
“OfReg is exploring options for introducing satellite internet providers in the country to ensure that any such services are properly licensed, meet consumer expectations and provide services on the same terms as existing providers.”
However, anecdotal evidence on social media suggests that many residents have purchased the device in Cayman or overseas and are using it here.
OfReg has not yet said when it expects approval for use of satellite terminals in the Cayman Islands, nor what consequences will be faced by residents who continue to import them privately.
