Police said the off-duty officer spotted the wanted man near Bathurst and King streets around 11:30 p.m. Saturday and called on-duty police.
Police said after officers arrived at the scene, the suspect, who was wanted for a shooting that occurred on Dec. 3, 2022 in the area of Church Street and East Front Street, fled on foot.
“During this time, the suspect shot the off-duty officer in the leg,” police said.

The suspect was only 28 years old at the time of the incident, and Canadian police issued a Canada-wide arrest warrant for him. The suspect was arrested and a gun was seized.

The Toronto Police Association said the off-duty officer was 30 years old and had six years of experience. They said he was treated and released from the hospital.
“Despite what happened, our members are in good spirits and recovering well,” the police union said in a post on social media platform X.
“We are thankful that he is recovering well and we are proud of his efforts.”
