Xinhua News Agency, Washington, December 19th. US President Obama announced on the 19th the establishment of a gun control task force led by Vice President Biden. The task force will be responsible for guiding the US government to continue to respond to calls for gun control after the Newtown tragedy in Connecticut.

Obama, who made the announcement in the White House briefing room with Biden standing by his side, said that while discussions about stopping future shootings must continue, “words need to turn into actions.”

Obama said the “complexity of the problem is no longer an excuse to delay action” and reiterated that he would “use the full power of my office to help advance efforts to prevent more tragedies like this from happening.”

Obama noted that no one law or set of laws can prevent more gun violence, and he stressed the importance of a holistic approach to the problem, including education and attention to psychological issues.

Obama promised that the task force will make new legal and operational recommendations in January and will push new gun control proposals through Congress.

Obama said the effort, led by Biden, a longtime gun control advocate who served in Congress for decades, is “not some committee in Washington” and it will not take six months to be shelved.

Biden will work with Cabinet members and outside groups to develop recommendations as the administration’s first steps following the Newtown massacre, while the president calls on Congress to restore a ban on assault weapons that expired in 2004 and pass legislation to close the gun show loophole that allows people to buy guns without background checks.

A gunman who attacked Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, New York, on Friday, killing 20 children and six adults, had earlier killed his own mother at home. He then committed suicide following the horrific shooting.
