Nils Kostanje made it to the final of the 100m butterfly. Patrick Pearson’s student clocked 50.59 in the semifinals. In doing so, he improved his national record by 0.29 seconds and advances to the quarterfinals in fourth place. The battle for gold is set for Saturday evening.
Kostanje trains at the Peter van den Hoogenbande Swimming Hall. Hungarian Kristof Milak set the fastest time of the night (50.38). He left behind Maxime Grousset of France (50.41) and Josh Liendo of Canada (50.42). Kostanje finished fourth at the world championships in Doha earlier this year.
At the Paris La Défense Arena, Costanje became the third Dutchman to qualify for an Olympic final in the two-lane butterfly. Cees Vervoorn finished fourth at the 1980 Moscow Olympics. In 2012, Joeri Verlinden finished sixth in London.
